One of the most important things we can do for ourselves in today’s world is to protect our mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny energy producers in your cells and are very easily damaged. Once they are damaged, they are not functioning properly and energy production goes down.
Not only do you feel fatigued, but mitochondria that are not functioning properly are behind many diseases, including cancer.
A cell without enough energy just cannot do its job properly – and that means problems for us.
Thankfully there are nutrients that support the growth and function and development of new mitochondria. R, S-alpha lipoic acid is great, but you also have Green Tea and Korean Ginseng and the wonderfully active Yerba Mate.
Yerba Mate is a member of the holly family and has a history of use as a tonic and stimulating drink. Traditionally used for mental fatigue, lethargy, loss of appetite, weight reduction and altitude sickness, it contains an impressive list of active compounds:
- vitamins A, B, C, E
- polyphenols (at levels comparable to those found in red wine) such as flavonoids and chlorogenic acid
- the caffeine, chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid have stimulating and digestive properties
The polyphenols in Yerba Mate have been shown to reduce the damaging effects of ROS (basically the oxidative stress we all have) on our mitochondria. They actually help protect the mitochondria, help increase the number of mitochondria – a very important function. These polyphenols also protect against damage to DNA by increasing our antioxidant defence mechanisms.
Love this Herb!!
